A devastating fire broke out at the trauma center of Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur, resulting in the deaths of six critically ill patients and leaving five others severely injured. Initial reports suggest that a short circuit may have ignited the blaze, while family members of the victims have accused hospital staff of negligence and ignoring warnings, prompting a swift investigation into the incident.
Dr. Anurag Dhakad, in charge of the trauma center, stated that the fire erupted in the storage room while 11 patients were being treated in the neuro intensive care unit (ICU). He confirmed that the cause of the fire is believed to be a short circuit.
Victims Identified and Response
Authorities have identified the deceased as Pintu (a resident of Sikar), Dilip (from Aandhi, Jaipur), Srinath, Rukmini, Khurma (all from Bharatpur), and Bahadur (from Sanganer, Jaipur). Dr. Dhakad reported that out of the 11 patients in the ICU, six lost their lives, including two women and four men. He added that 14 other patients were safely relocated to a different ICU.
The fire caused chaos within the building, with smoke rapidly spreading throughout the floor, instilling panic among patients and their families. Numerous documents, ICU equipment, and other belongings were destroyed in the flames.
Rescue Efforts and Eyewitness Accounts
Hospital staff and relatives of patients worked together to evacuate individuals from the building, even carrying them out on their beds. Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to control the fire within approximately two hours.
An eyewitness, a ward boy named Vikas, recounted that before the fire escalated, he and other staff members attempted to save as many people as possible. He mentioned, 'When we received news of the fire, we were in the operating theater, so we rushed to rescue those inside the center. We managed to save at least three or four patients, but the flames were too intense for us to enter the building.'
Official Response and Investigation
Police arrived later but were initially unable to enter the building due to heavy smoke. Firefighters had to break a window on the opposite side of the building to extinguish the flames. State officials, including Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel, and Home State Minister Jawahar Singh Bedham, visited the trauma center to assess the situation.
During their visit, relatives of two patients expressed their anguish, claiming that staff members fled during the fire. They also stated that hospital personnel were unable to provide updates on their loved ones' conditions. One individual remarked, 'We saw smoke and immediately alerted the staff, but they paid no attention. When the fire broke out, they were the first to run away. Now, we cannot get any information about our patients.'
Government's Commitment to Safety
The Chief Minister later arrived at the scene to speak with doctors and patients. He expressed his condolences on social media, stating, 'The incident of fire at the trauma center of Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur is extremely unfortunate. I visited the hospital to gather information from doctors and officials and directed that immediate relief efforts be ensured. Every possible measure is being taken to ensure the safety and treatment of patients and care for those affected, with continuous monitoring of the situation.'
Sharma added, 'May Lord Shri Ram grant peace to the departed souls. The state government stands with the affected families and is committed to providing all possible assistance.' Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed his sorrow over the tragedy and urged the state government to conduct a high-level inquiry to prevent such incidents in the future.
